F-HUNTERS, the second solar flare observation campaign, organized by european consortium F-CHROMA, has just started. The main scientific goal of the collaboration is to understand physical processes that occur in the solar chromosphere during flares.
The campaign starts on 14 July and ends on 23 July 2016. The leading instrument used for observations is IRIS (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/iris/index.html). At the same time, several of the largest solar telescopes on Earth will perform accompanying observations. Amateur astronomers are asked to capture long sequences of images of the Sun, with intervals of about 10-20 seconds. Images saved in lossless format (such as FITS, TIFF, RAW, and not JPEG or PNG) have the most scientific value. Those images will provide more complete context of solar phenomena, in contrast to professional telescopes with extremely narrow field of view. Observations in chromospheric lines (H-alpha or Ca-K) are preferred, however we will also appreciate good quality white light images.
